Honey bees are not endangered in the traditional sense.
The European honey bee (Apis mellifera) is the most commercially managed insect on the planet. Beekeepers work hard to maintain the population of their colonies. That is why global hive numbers have been increasing over the past few decades, especially in Asia and parts of Africa.
However, high colony loss rates are the real problem. In the United States, beekeepers have reported losing roughly 40 to 50% of managed colonies annually. The main causes behind this are Varroa mite infestations, pesticide exposure, and habitat loss.
Beekeepers do replace those losses, which is why the overall managed population holds up. But the pressure on individual colonies is real and ongoing.
So honey bees are not endangered. They are, however, struggling.
There are roughly 20,000 known species of bees in the world, and honey bees are just one of them. But the concern about the species being endangered is regarding all those species.
Wild bee species are in significantly worse shape than managed honey bees. A widely cited study found that wild bee abundance in North America had declined by around 23% since 1990. In Europe, more than one in ten wild bee species now face extinction.
The rusty patched bumblebee became the first bee species listed as endangered in the continental United States in 2017. Its population had dropped by nearly 90% from its historical range. Several other bumblebee species across North America and Europe are on a similar trajectory.
Not all bees forage across a wide variety of flowers. Some bee species evolved alongside a single plant and can only survive where that plant grows. Habitat change hits them harder because of it. As monoculture farming and urban sprawl reduce floral diversity, these bees simply run out of food and cannot adapt the way generalist foragers can.
Bee population decline is not the result of one problem. Several distinct issues have been building simultaneously, and their combined effect is harder to reverse than any one of them would be in isolation.
Wildflower meadows, hedgerows, and natural foraging areas have been replaced by intensive agriculture and urban development. Bees need diverse flowering plants across seasons. When that variety disappears, populations also disappear.
Neonicotinoid pesticides have been particularly damaging to bees. Research has linked them to impaired navigation, reduced reproduction, and weakened immunity in bees. The EU banned outdoor use of neonicotinoids in 2018, though several member states have since been granted exceptions.
The Varroa destructor mite is the most significant threat to managed honey bee colonies worldwide. It feeds on bees and transmits viruses that weaken entire colonies. Most managed hives require active treatment to survive it.
Shifting seasons throw off the timing between bees and flowers. When blooms arrive before bees emerge from hibernation, pollination suffers. Extreme weather adds to this, hitting nesting and foraging at the same time as the other issues.
Governments, conservation groups, and individual beekeepers are all working towards protecting bees:

Bees pollinate roughly a third of the food humans eat. Without them, the supply of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds would collapse. The economic value of bee pollination is estimated at over $200 billion annually worldwide.
This means bee safety is both an ecological and a food safety concern for humans and other organisms.
Some bee species are endangered. Honey bees are not, but they face serious ongoing issues. Wild and native bees are in steeper decline, and the overall trend for global bee populations is one that needs real attention.
